MRS. LAMPERT TOURS ANTI-TB ORGANIZATIONS - Mrs. James B. Lampert, wife of the High Commissioner, observed the facilities and operations of the Ryukyu Anti-Tuberculosis (TB) Association in Miebashi, Naha, and the Okinawa Ex-TB Patients Association's workshop in Miyagi, Urasoe, City, Feb. 1. This was Mrs. Lampert's eleventh in a series of familiarization tours of medical and welfare institutions in the Ryukyu Islands. The Anti-TB association was organized through efforts of Dr. Gilberto S. Pesquera, Who was sent to Okinawa by the Pacific Science Board of the National Research Council in Washington D. C., and local physicians and officially opened its doors in September 1952. The association was established as a non-profit organization with funds raised by selling 600,000 TB seals which were donated by the American Tuberculosis Association and from the Mike Toder Boxing Shows. In past five years, the association examined 288,459 persons and detected 1,449 who needed treatment. Mrs. Lampert also visited the Okinawa Ex-TB Patients Association's workshop which is designed to provide technical training for former tuberculosis patients in English and Japanese typing, offset machine operation, and vehicle driving. The workshop building was constructed with a donation of $24,000 from the Kadena Officers' Wives Club (KOWC) in December 1969. In the past five years, the Ex-TB Patients
Association has trained 139 former patients, offered sheltered workshop employment for 114 former patients and provided counselling services for 581 persons. Donations included two Japanese typewriters from KOWC and a vehicle from KOWC and the Fort Buckner Officers' Wives Club.

ランパート高等弁務官夫人は琉球結核予防会(那覇市美栄橋)と沖縄療友会の結核回復者補導授産センター(浦添市宮城)を2月1日訪れ、施設や運営状況を視察した。ランパート夫人は、これまで沖縄の医療及び福祉施設を訪問して来たが、今日の視察はその一環で11番目である。ワシントンD. C. 在国立調査協議会、太平洋科学部から派遣されたヒルベルト・S・ペスケラー医師と地元の医師の協力で、琉球結核予防会は1952年9月設立された。同会は米結核予防会の600,000枚結核予防シール売上金及びマイク・トーダー・ボクシング・ショウからの寄付金で非営利団体として設立された。同予防会は過去5ヶ年間に288,459人の検診を行ない、1,449人の患者を発見した。結核予防会の視察を終えた後、ランパート夫人は結核回復者の職業補導のために設立された結核療友会の結核回復者授産センターを訪問した。同センターは1969年12月に嘉手納将校婦人クラブから贈られた寄付金24,000ドルで建設されたもので、結核回復者を対象に日・英・タイプや自動車運転の指導を行っている。過去5ヶ年間に、療友会は結核回復者139人に職業指導を行ない、又114人に授産産業並びに581人の相談役を務めた。嘉手納将校婦人クラブでは、和文タイプライター2台、又同クラブとフォートバックナー将校婦人クラブの共同で車1台を職業補導のため同センターに寄贈した。
