Civil Administrator Shannon McCune (L) presented a book titled "The Voyage of the Alceste to the Ryukyus and Southeast Asia," written by John M'Leod, surgeon of the Alceste, with an introduction by Civil Administrator McCune, to Chief Executive Seisaku Ota on Nov. 5. The presentation was made commemorating publication of the book and Culture Preservation Week, which is presently observed to preserve and recognize the culture in the Ryukyus. The book on the Alceste, which sailed to the Ryukyus and Southeast and East Asia during 1816-17, is regarded as one of the most important historical materials of Ryukyuan history.
【和訳】 マキューン民政官、大田行政主席に「アルセステ号航海記」を贈る
シャノン・マキューン民政官(左)はアルセステ号の外科医ジョン・マクラウドによって書かれた「アルセステ号航海記」という本を11月5日に大田政作行政主席に贈った。贈呈は、書籍の出版と文化保存週間(琉球の文化を守り、認識することを目的とする)を記念して行われた。1816年から1817年に琉球、東南アジア、東アジアに航海したアルセステ号に関する本は、琉球史の最も重要な史跡の１つとされる。
