Lt. Col. Kanshi S. Yamashita, Chief of the Miyako Civil Affairs Team, U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, received a Meritorious Service Medal from Civil Administrator Robert A. Fearey at a ceremony in USCAR on Oct. 28. The citation, accompanying the award, said Col. Yamashita "distinguished himself by exceptionally meritorious service while assigned to Headquarters, U.S. Forces, Japan, from July 1968 to July 1971." It further said: "When the Military Assistance Advisory Group, Japan was disestablished, Col. Yamashita was chosen to organize and head a new tri-service branch ... responsible for advisory and liaison functions with the Japan Self Defense Force. He energetically developed far-reaching programs in support of our Treaty of Mutual Cooperation and Security with Japan. His leadership resulted in constructive assistance to the Japanese Self Defense Forces while furthering U.S. objectives in the Far East."

琉球列島米国民政府宮古民政官府長カンシ・S・ヤマシタ中佐に10月28日、ロバート・A・フィアリー民政官より勲功章を授与された。1968年から1971年にかけて在日米軍本部に配属中に非常に功績のある業務を果たしたとして評価された。さらに「日本の軍事顧問団が廃止された時、ヤマシタ大佐は新しい三軍支部を組織する任務を与えられ、自衛隊の諮問・連絡業務を担当。日本との相互協力及び安全保障条約を支持する広範なプログラムを精力的に展開した。同大佐のリーダーシップにより極東における米国の目標を推進しながら、日本の自衛隊に建設的な支援をもたらした」と述べた。
