Dr. (Major) Anthony F. Vuturo, preventive medicine officer, Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR), receives his major's leaves May 1 from Civil Administrator Robert A. Fearey. At right: Mrs. Vuturo. Since he arrived at USCAR on Mar. 30, 1969, Dr. Vuturo has organized a special upgrading course for the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) parasitology laboratory. He has lectured to interns and students at the Okinawa Central Hospital and the University of the Ryukyus College of Health and Science. The filariasis eradication and the anti-malaria programs have been under his supervision. This has necessitated the close coordination of experts from Japan proper, GRI and the U.S. Army Medical Center. Many other duties carried out by Dr. Vuturo include radiation monitoring and close coordination with many counterparts in GRI and the local professional societies. Born in Louisville, Ky., on Aug. 6, 1940, Dr. Vuturo obtained his MD from the University of Kentucky, College of Medicine, in 1966. He received his medical training in family practice at the Upstate Medical Center and St. Joseph's Hospital in Syracuse, N. Y. He has studied community medicine at the University of Valle in Cali, Colombia in 1966. Since he entered the U.S. Army in August 1968, Dr. Vuturo has studied at Brooke Army Medical Center at Fort Sam Houston, Texas; Walter Reed Army Institute of Research, Washington, D. C.; and the Public Health Service Center at Montgomery, Alabama.
