Civil Administrator Stanley S. Carpenter (L) and Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) Chief Executive Seiho Matsuoka signed an initial agreement covering that portion of U.S. aid - $8,633,000 - granted directly to the GRI under the previous Price Act which had set a ceiling at $12 million on aid. The rest of the $3,367,000 under the previous Price Act is being provided by USCAR for Ryukyuan scholarships, doctor's training at the Okinawa Central Hospital and other technical assistance. In a ceremony held Feb. 27 at his office in Urasoe-Son, the Civil Administrator informed the Chief Executive that the U.S. Civil Administration will provide a total of $25,350,000 for Ryukyuan economic and social development during the current Fiscal Year 1968. In addition, under the revised Price Act ceiling of 17.5 million, President Johnson is requesting the U.S. Congress to provide a supplemental sum of $5.5 million for Fiscal Year 1968.
