Civil Administrator Stanley S. Carpenter welcomed a group of some sixty visiting international tourism leaders at a briefing held Feb. 17 at the U.S. Armed Forces Museum in Sukiran. The delegates visited Okinawa following the closing of the 17th annual Pacific Area Travel Association convention in Taipei. During their one-day stay on Okinawa, the group visited the Nakagusuku Castle, University of the Ryukyus, the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) Museum in Shuri, leading hotels and shopping centers. The program for the day closed with evening teahouse entertainment featuring traditional Ryukyuan dances. Both the flight to and from the island and the day's program were provided free through the courtesy of the sponsors - the GRI, the Ryukyu Chamber of Commerce and Industry and the U.S. Chamber of Commerce in Okinawa - in a concerted effort to speed the growth of tourism in the Ryukyus. The number of visitors in the Ryukyus has increased better than five-fold between 1960 and 1967. Approximately 112,000 came to the islands in 1967, a jump of more than 20,000 compared to 1966.
