CIVIL ADMINISTRATOR VISITS YAEYAMA
Civil Administrator Robert A. Fearey presented a High Commissioner's Fund grant of $30,000 for construction of a new fire station in Ishigaki City on Sept. 25, during his first visit to Yaeyama since assuming his post last month. The Civil Administrator, accompanied by the Government of the Ryukyu Islands Legislator Katsu Hoshi and Language Aide Tatsuro Fujita, was originally scheduled to make a busy two-day tour of Ishigaki, but had been forced to cut his visit short because of the approach of Typhoon Elsie. In presenting the check to Mayor Kiko Ishigaki, Mr. Fearey said, "It was your community spirit, your interest in the progress of Ishigaki, and your willingness to contribute time and money to a worthy project that has resulted in this happy occasion." The city of Ishigaki is donating $50,000 toward the construction of the fire station. Mr. Fearey also discussed civic matters with the mayor and other local officials and representatives of various groups.

民政官の八重山訪問
先月の就任以来初の八重山訪問となったロバート・A・フィアリー民政官は9月25日、石垣市の新消防署建設のための高等弁務官基金助成金3万ドルを贈呈した。琉球立法院議員の星克氏と琉球列島米国民政府民政官付通訳のフジタ・タツロウ氏を伴った民政官は当初、2日間の過密日程をこなす予定だったが、台風エルシーの接近により滞在を短くせざるをえなかった。石垣喜興市長に小切手を贈呈したフィアリー民政官は「皆さんの地域の精神と石垣の発展に関心を持ち、立派な事業に時間とお金を寄付しようとする姿勢があったからこそ、このような嬉しい機会が生まれた」と述べた。石垣市は消防署建設に向けて５万ドルを寄付している。フィアリー氏は市長をはじめとする地元関係者や各団体の代表者らと市民問題についても話し合った。
