three mercy missions in one day, a rare occurrence, were taken in stride Feb. 18 by personnel of the Public Safety Department, Office of the High Commissioner, when they were called on to coordinate emergency medical air evacuations of a Ryukyuan sugar mill worker from Yonaguni Island at the tip of the southern Ryukyus, a Japanese sailor off a ship at Miyako Island, and a dockworker from Okino Erabu Island in the Japanese-controlled Amami Oshima group above Okinawa - all victims of accidents and requiring immediate medical treatment on Okinawa. Ohira, and Minoru Miyahira, coordinating between the Government of the Ryukyu Islands. Police, Naha Coastal Radio, and the U.S. Air Force Air Defense Control Center in Naha Air Base which set up the mercy flights by Army and Air Force aircraft The U.S. and GRI agencies followed standard operating procedures in reacting swiftly within a matter of minutes in setting up the necessary air transportation and medical aid for the stricken victims.

2日18日、高等弁務官室公安局職員が1日に3回の救援派遣要請を受け、南琉球の先端にある与那国島では琉球製糖工場の労働者、宮古島の船からは日本人船員、そして沖縄の北で日本の領域でもある奄美群島沖永良部島からは港湾労働者、全員が事故の犠牲者で、直ちに沖縄で治療を必要とされ、緊急医療空輸の手配がされた。写真は、警察、那覇沿岸ラジオ、那覇空軍基地にあるアメリカ空軍航空防衛管理センターとの調整を行った、ハリマン・N・シモンズ氏(高等弁務官室公安局局長)の他に（左から）、ヨシダ・カズオ氏、ジョン・M・大平氏、ミヤヒラ・ミノル氏の3人で、米国及び琉球政府関係機関はこの負傷者空輸及び治療手当に当たって正規の手順に従い敏速な行動をとった。
