GEN. HAINES SPEAKS AT THE GGC WELCOME DINNER
Gen. Ralph E. Haines, Jr., Commander-in-Chief, United States Army, Pacific, arrived on Okinawa April 9 for a two-day visit, during which he conferred with Lt. Gen. James B. Lampert, High Commissioner ,of the Ryukyus and other U.S. officials and was guest of honor at a dinner sponsored by the Golden Gate Club (GGC), composed of Okinawans who have studied in the United States under Department of Army - sponsored scholarships and in Hawaii under East-West Center auspices, and others who have toured the U.S. under U.S. programs. At the dinner on April 9 at the Harborview Club in Naha, General Haines said, "Okinawa's strategic importance to the United States and to the entire Free WorId has grown along with our commitments in the Far East. Today, our bases here are fundamental to the support of operations in Vietnam as well as in other nations throughout the region, although reversion to Japan will result in certain modifications to the U.S. command structure here, the importance of Okinawa to our defense posture will continue in the years ahead.

金門クラブの歓迎夕食会兼講演会でヘインズ大将が講演
ラルフ・ヘインズ・ジュニア米陸軍太平洋軍司令長官は4月9日、沖縄を2日間訪問し、ジェームズ・ランパート中将（高等弁務官）をはじめとする米民政府関係者と会談し、また、陸軍省後援の奨学金で米国に留学したことのある沖縄県民や、東西センターの後援でハワイに留学したことのある沖縄人、および米国のプログラムで米国を訪問したことのある沖縄人で構成される金門クラブが主催の夕食会に来賓として出席した。4月9日に那覇市のハーバービュークラブで行われた夕食会で、ヘインズ大将は「米国と自由世界全体にとって沖縄の戦略的重要性は、極東での取り組みとともに高まってきた。日本への復帰に伴い、米軍の指揮系統にも一定の変更が生じることになるが、わが国の防衛態勢における沖縄の重要性は今後も継続するだろう」と述べた。
