OKINAWA YOUTH CORPS ? Col. William W. Cobb (L, at rostrum), Special Assistant to High Commissioner Paul W. Caraway, delivered a congratulatory address to 94 youth corps members, joining the Tairayama and Gogayama Camps in northern Okinawa, on Jan. 20. Translating for him was Ralph K. Harada (R, at rostrum), Office of the High Commissioner. Officials attending the ceremony included Speaker Akio Nagamine of the Government of the Ryukyus Legislature and Deputy Chief Executive Hiroshi Senaga. The Okinawa Youth Corps was established in April, 1955 to provide young men with the knowledge and technical knowhow and to develop a sense of pioneer spirit in them through an extensive six-month training program which includes agricultural education, practical farm training, operation, repair and assembly of farm machines and vehicles, and studies in the language, geography, history, culture, and customs of South America.
【和訳】 沖縄青年産業開発隊 - ポール・キャラウェイ高等弁務官特別補佐官ウィリアム・W・コブ大佐（左）は20日、沖縄北部の平山キャンプと五箇山キャンプに入団した94名の青年団員に祝辞を述べた。通訳を行ったのは、高等弁務官室のラルフ・K・ハラダ(演壇右)。式典には、長嶺秋夫立法院議長と瀬長浩行政副主席が出席。沖縄産業開発青年隊は、農業教育、農業実習、農機・車両の操作・修理・組立、南米の言語・地理・歴史・文化・習慣などを学ぶ半年間の充実した研修プログラムを通じて、知識と技術のノウハウを提供し、開拓者精神を養うことを目的に1955年4月に設立された。
