ENGLISH LANGUAGE CENTER (ELC) in Shuri offers orientation programs for Ryukyuan scholarship students who are scheduled to study at American colleges or universities, seminars for local in-service teachers of English, English courses for Government of the Ryukyus' employees and ten other language programs for students, the general public and Ryukyuan employee of the United States forces. Established in 1963 with an initial enrollment of 254 persons, the center has offered English courses for 1,329 persons last year. Due to the increased demand for English instruction from educational and professional groups as well as from the general public, the ELC established branch offices in the Miyako and Yaeyama islands last year. The ELC added a third floor to its main building to meet public demand for additional services. The latest expansion project was completed in September 1969 at a cost of $45,000 provided by USCAR.

英語センター - 那覇市首里にある英語センターでは、アメリカに留学する学生のためのオリエンテーション、英語教師のセミナー、琉球政府職員のための英語講座、その他に学生、一般および軍雇用員を対象とした10の英語講座を提供している。1963年に設立された当時は254名の受講生しかいなかったが、昨年は何と1,329名の学生や一般の人達が同センター提供の講座を受けたのである。一般や教育およびその他のグループの間で英語教育への熱意が高まったので、同センターでは昨年、宮古と八重山に各々支所を開設し、更に首里の英語センターも三階を増築した。この拡張工事は民政府の予算45,000ドルで1969年9月に完了した。
