High Commissioner Awards were presented to two first prize winners Toshio Matayoshi (3rd from R), Matsushima Junior High School; and Suwako Nagahama (3rd from L), Mawashi Junior High School, following the Fifth All-Ryukyu Junior High School Story Telling Contest held May 27 at the Naha Ryukyuan-American Cultural Center (NRACC). 16 students from junior high schools on Okinawa participated in the contest which was one of the many activities of Ryukyuan-American Friendship week, May 21-27. The objective of the contest was to motivate junior high school students to learn and speak better English. The contest committee was composed of representatives from the Okinawa Union of English Teachers Association, the Golden Gate Club and the NRACC. Posing at the award ceremony (L-R) are 3rd Prize Winner Takako Soeishi, Goeku Junior High School; 2nd Prize Winner Chiyoko Kudaka, Uenoyama Junior High School; Nagahama; 3rd Prize Winner Masayuki Kakazu, Gushichan Junior High School; 2nd Prize Winner Toshio Hanmine, Uenoyama Junior High School; and Matayoshi. All winners were 3rd-grade students of junior high schools.
【和訳】 英語ストーリー・コンテストの受賞者
5月27日、那覇琉米文化会館で開催された「第5回全沖縄中学校英語ストーリー・コンテスト」の結果、最優秀賞に輝いた松島中学校のマタヨシ・トシオさん（右から3人目）と真和志中学校のナガハマ・スワコさん（左から3人目）の2名に高等弁務官賞が授与された。このコンテストには沖縄県内の中学校から16名の生徒が参加し、5月21日から27日まで開催された琉球米親善週間の活動の一環として行われた。このコンテストの目的は、中学生の英語学習意欲を高め、より良い英語を話せるようにすることであった。コンテスト実行委員会は、沖縄英語教師連盟、金門クラブ、那覇琉米文化会館の代表者で構成された。表彰式で記念写真を撮るのは左から、第3位のソエイシ・タカコさん（越来中学校）、第2位のクダカ・チヨコさん（上山中学校）、ナガハマさん、第3位のカカズ。マサユキさん（具志頭中学校）、第2位のハンミネ・トシオさん（上山中学校）、マタヨシさん。受賞者はいずれも中学3年生。
