Falling wounded in the fierce fighting for possession of Saipan Island in the Marianas. Yankee fighters receive emergency treatment at a First Aid Station on the beach before being transferred to Coast Guard-manned assault transports anchored offshore. Causalities were high in the conquest of the Nipponese stronghold less than 1,500 miles from Tokyo, Americans killed, wounded and missing being listed at more than 9,700 recently.
