RESTORED SCROLLS PRESENTED TO GRI MUSEUM -- Mrs. Edward M. Featherstone (2nd from L) and her daughter, Lisa, with Seiko Hokama (R), director of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) Museum in Shuri, and custodian Seitoku Oshiro view two restored Chinese scrolls which were saved from total destruction during a fire at the old museum in Shuri during the Battle of Okinawa in 1945 by Mrs. Featherstone's uncle, Edwin A. Buchanan. Mr. Buchanan gave the war-damaged cultural assets to former High Commissioner Paul W. Caraway, who in turn sent them to museum experts in Taiwan for restoration. Mrs. Featherstone presented the scrolls to the GRI Museum on March 25. One of the scrolls shows a drawing of Kwan Yu, a great Chinese scholar and hero who was born in A. D. 163, and his subordinate Cho Hi. The other is a scroll of Chinese calligraphy. Mr. Buchanan was born and raised in Japan as was Mrs. Featherstone's mother. Mrs. Featherstone came to Okinawa in March 1968 with her husband, an International Relations Officer of the U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, and their daughter. The Featherstones will return to the United States in June. ≪修正された掛け軸、琉球政府博物館に贈呈 -- エドワード・M・フェザーストーン夫人とその令嬢リサちゃんは3月25日、首里にある琉球政府博物館を訪れ、同夫人の叔父さんにあたるエドウィン・A・バクナン氏が、第二次大戦の時、燃えていた郷土博物館から持ち出した掛軸二点を同博物館に贈呈した。この文化財二点は1962年当時の高等弁務官であったキャラウェイ中将に送られたものであるが火災と弾痕の破損を受けていたので、台湾に送られ専門家によって修正されたものである。掛軸の一つは西暦163年に生まれた支那の学者で英雄であった関羽とその従者張飛の絵であり、もう一つは書道の掛軸である。バクナン氏は、フェザーストーン夫人のお母さんと同様に日本で生まれ、日本で育った。フェザーストーン夫人は米国民政府の渉外官である主人と共に、1968年3月に来島し、来る6月には家族と共に帰国することになっている。≫
