PROVIDE COMFORT, SHOW COMPASSION TO YOUR PATIENTS -- that was the advice given by Dr. (Col) Robert T. Jensen to seventy graduates of the Naha Nursing School on March 2. Dr. Jensen, now director of the Health, Education and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus (USCAR), recalled his experiences as a medical missionary in Africa about 12 years ago. He found that the reason why mothers were not leaving their children at a village hospital was the cool attitude of the nurses there. When a new chief nurse cam and demonstrated a capacity to love and comfort the little patients, mothers then gained confidence in the hospital and began leaving their children for treatment. Dr. Jensen said: In addition to the nurses' responsibility to carry out doctors' orders, pay close attention to patients' conditions, and study to keep up with scientific advances, there is "another responsibility that is equally important"... the "responsibi1ity to love -- to really care about your patients. Modern medicine and surgery are not enough by themselves. medicine without love is not good medicine." ≪那覇看護学校では去る3月2日、70人の看護婦と助産婦の卒業式が催され、その席上、ロバート・T・ジェンスン米国民政府厚生教育局長は、"患者に安らぎをもたらし、友情を示しなさい"と祝辞を述べた。ジェンスン局長は12年前に宣教医師としてアフリカに派遣され、その時の経験を相出し、次のように語った。「アフリカのある部落では、母親が自分の幼児を病院に入院させなかった理由は看護婦の冷たい態度にあることを私は知りました。新しい看護婦がその部落に赴任し、幼児を慰め、かつ愛することを身をもって示したとき、母親は病院を信頼し、治療のため入院させるようになった。看護婦には医師の指示に従い、患者の容体に十分に配慮し、科学の進歩に遅れをとらないために絶えず学ぶ責任があるが、それと同じ程度に重要な責任に患者を愛し、親身になって世話することがあります。現代の医術はそれ自体では十分でありません。即ち、愛情のない医術は良い医術とは云えません」。≫
