MIDWIFERY MEETING -- Captain Duane A. Sebahar, chief, Public Health Div., Public Health and Welfare Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, is shown urging members of the Okinawa Midwives Association at their 18th general meeting on their role in promotion of maternal-child health and maintenance of a high level of midwifery practice. The meeting was held at the Okinawa Hall, Asato, April 25, attended by some 200 persons including Bunsho Gima, director, Welfare .Dept., Government of the Ryukyu Island, and Dr. Chokei Ogimi, president, Okinawa Medical Association. In his speech, Capt. Sebahar said "the Ryukyuan people have depended on the midwives for many years not only for the deliveries of babies but for guidance and protection of the mother throughout pregnancy and for the care of the new born." In the Ryukyus, midwives still play an important role, delivering 63 percent of the total births. Therefore, a spokesman said, the midwives have a good opportunity to cooperate with the GRI stillbirth registration law which has just been enacted. Interpreting for him is Miss Masako Shimabukuro, public health nurse of the division. 【和訳】助産婦総会 - 第18回沖縄助産婦協会通常総会で米国民政府公衆衛生福祉局公衆衛生部長デュアン・A・セバハ大尉が会員に対し、母子保健の推進と助産技≪術の向上等で果す助産婦の重大な役割を強調しているところ。この総会は4月25日那覇市内の沖貿ホールで開催され、琉球政府厚生局局長儀間文彰氏及び沖縄医師会長大宜見朝計医師等約200人が出席した。セバハ大尉は祝辞の中で「沖縄住民は多年にわたって出産のみならず、妊婦の指導と保護及び新生児の保護等で助産婦に負うところが大きい」と語った。沖縄では助産婦が全出生児の63パーセントの出生に当っており、助産婦はこのほど成立し施行された死産届法に協力する良い機会を与えられている。なお通訳しているのは同公衆衛生部の公看島袋昌子さん。≫
