RESEARCH SHIP MAKES OKINAWA CALL -- The R/V VEMA, a U.S. oceanographic research vessel, arrived in Okinawa on July 5 for a three-day call. The Vema accompanied a Japanese research ship, the Dai-23 Konan Maru (not shown). Both ships are designed to research the "Ryukyu Trench" near Okinawa. The Vema is operated by the Lamont Geological Observatory of Columbia University and will complete current studies this summer. The U.S. National Science Foundation supports the scientific activities carried out by the Vema, which was among the more than 40 vessels from 20 countries which participated in the International Indian Ocean Expedition in 1960. During that expedition, the ship conducted research on meteorogical conditions, the ocean's geology, tides, currents and chemical properties as well as biological activities of marine flora and fauna.
【和訳】調査船が沖縄に寄港 - 米国の海洋調査船ヴェマ号が7月5日、3日間の日程で沖縄に寄港した。同船は日本の調査船第23コウナン丸（写真なし）に随行しており、両船とも沖縄近海の「琉球海溝」の調査が目的。ヴェマ号はコロンビア大学のラモント地質観測所が運営し、この夏に調査を終える予定。米国国立科学財団は、1960年の国際インド洋探査に参加した20か国40隻以上の船の1つであるヴェマ号の活動を支援している。この探査でヴェマ号は気象条件、海洋地質、潮汐、海流、海水の化学的性質、海洋動植物の生物学的活動に関する調査を行った。
