HIGH COMMISSIONER DESIGNATES DISASTER AREAS -- High Commissioner James B. Lampert Oct. 8 declared certain Okinawa areas hit by heavy winds and rains from October 4 through the 7th "disaster areas" eligible for assistance under existing emergency relief programs. The High Commissioner personally inspected the stricken areas by helicopter. Three joint U.S. Civil Administration-Government of the Ryukyu Islands teams inspected the damage and transported relief foods and materials by helicopters from the Ninth Marine Amphibious Brigade and the U.S. Army Flight Detachment, Hamby Air field, on the same day. The first team went to Ginama and Oku villages in Kunigami-Son with 1,500 kilograms of rice and other foodstuffs provided by the GRI welfare department. Another joint team transported 500 blankets, puchased with USCAR's typhoon disaster relief funds, for the flood-ravaged area of Nakijin-Son on Motobu Peninsula. The third team went to Tokashiki Island in the Kerama group west of Naha to survey the damage.

500枚の毛布を運んできた米海兵隊ヘリコプターに集まる今帰仁中学校の生徒たち。毛布は、洪水被害地のために米国民政府の台風災害救援基金で購入されたもの。
高等弁務官が災害地域を指定－10月8日、ジェームズ・B・ランパート高等弁務官は、10月4日から7日にかけての強風と大雨により被災した沖縄の特定の地域を、既存の緊急援助プログラムに基づく援助の対象とする「災害地域」に指定した。高等弁務官は自らヘリコプターで被災地を視察し、同日、米軍民政府・琉球政府合同の３チームが、第九海兵隊水陸両旅団とハンビー飛行場米陸軍飛行分遣隊のヘリコプターで被害状況を視察し、救援物資を輸送した。最初のチームは、国頭村の宜名真と奥に、琉球政府福祉部から提供された米などの食料品1,500キログラムを積んで向かった。別の合同チームは、民政府の台風災害救援基金で購入した毛布500枚を、本部半島の今帰仁村の水害被災地へ運んだ。第3陣は、那覇の西に位置する慶良間諸島の渡嘉敷島で被害状況を調査した。
