Some members of the Brass Ensemble on campus. The University is located in the city of Lawrence in eastern Kansas (except for part of its School of Medicine in Kansas City, Kansas). More than 11,000 students are enrolled in the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences, Graduate School and the eight other schools into which the University is divided. Courses in the School of Fine Arts are intended to acquaint students with the fine arts, as an important field of a liberal culture, either as members of a discriminating public or as trained practitioners. The School offers instruction to prepare students for careers in professional art and music activities, and to promote scholarship, research and teaching in the arts.
The University of Kansas Brass Ensemble is composed of young student musicians performing on traditional orchestral brass instruments (French horns, trumpets, trombones, tuba and percussion). The Ensemble was formed in 1958 by its director, Kenneth Bloomquist, among talented and interested students enrolled in Mr. Bloomquist's course in brass ensemble. Several of the young musicians have performed with outstanding professional and semi-professional American musical organizations. The Ensemble's tour on Okinawa, from Feb. 14 to 24, will be sponsored by the Lions Clubs of the Ryukyu Islands.
