BOWLING TOURNAMENT -- Deputy Civil Administrator Edward E. Bennett opened the Okinawa Bowing [Bowling?] Association' 12th annual tournament at Naha Lanes by rolling the first ball on Feb. 6. Col. Bennett said at the opening ceremony, "The field of sport has traditionally been the common ground on which mutual understanding and respect is internationally achieved. Your organization has continued this tradition." Participation by Ryukyuans has increased since 1955 from a relatively few local military employees in military bowling centers to the many thousands, both young and old, presently participating in this popular indoor recreational sport in the 11 commercial centers in the Ryukyus.≪2月6日、那覇ボーリング場での沖縄ボーリング協会第十二回トーナメント開会式でファースト・ボールを投げるエドワード・E・ベネット副民政官。開会式で“スポーツは国際的相互理解の場として伝統的にその成果をあげて来た。当協会もその伝統をうけついでいる。”と述べた。琉球人のボーリング人口は、1955年軍ボーリング場での少ない軍雇用員ボーラーから、現在は数千人におよび、民間11のボーリング場で、老いも若きも、室内娯楽競技に励んでいる。≫
