GRI HONORS ARMY BAND LEADER -- The Government of the Ryukyu Islands today presented certificates of appreciation to CWO Harry H. Hollowell, conductor of the 29th Army Band, for "contributing to mutual. friendship through music." The certificates were awarded during a combined Ryukyuan-American band concert on the lawn in front of the GRI executive building in downtown Naha during the noon hour. CWO Hollowell, making his last appearance in Naha, conducted a band composed of members of the 29th Army, the University or the Ryukyus and the Koza and Futenma Senior High Schools bands. He departs Okinawa next month for reassignment in the United States. In presenting the certificates of appreciation, Seiko Kohagura, director of the GRI's Education Department, said, "The people of the Ryukyus are grateful to CWO Hollowell and the band for the popularization and promotion of music in the schools and the communities." The certificate particularly cited the band for playing in areas where the people are unprivileged to hear band music. Shoichi Ota, director of the GRI's Social Affairs Department, praised the conductor for "contributing to mutual friendship between the Ryukyus and the United States through music." CWO Hollowell, in accepting the certificates of appreciation, said he was happy to be able to "assist Ryukyuan-American friendship through the medium of music. "I hope and pray," he said, "that this type of program will continue long after I am gone." The 29th Army, under CWO Hollowell, has played at various Ryukyuan and American affairs and gatherings. It has become famous for its renditions of old Ryukyuan Folk music--arranged by the conductor for the band.
