SCIENCE YOUTH DAY -- Three hundred Ryukyuan and American high schools students enjoyed an action-packed Science Youth Day program of visits to outstanding local industrial, engineering and scientific activities, Feb. 13 and 14. The program was sponsored by the Ryukyu Electric Power Corporation (REPC) in cooperation with the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI), Ryukyu Industrial Federation, Society of American Military Engineers, and U.S. Forces on Okinawa. Highlights of the ninth annual program ware visits to and lecture at the Chatan Power Plant, Ishikawa Water Treatment plant, the Air Force's Communication Group, the Army's Sukiran Dial Central Office, Kyoei Steel Mill, Naha Sewerage Treatment Plant, Okinawa Broadcasting Corporation, and the GRI Computer Center. Science Youth Day commemorates the birthday of the great American inventor, Thomas Alva Edison, and is observed annually world-wide under the auspices of the Edison Foundation as an international educational program to encourage youth to become interested in science and engineering. Col. Harry W. Lombard, director, Public Works Dept., U.S. Civil Administration of the Ryukyus, representing High Commissioner James B. Lampert, spoke to the students at a luncheon at the Kokuba Bldg. in Naha , Feb. 14. "A common cry of modern youth world-wide," he said, is that they 'seek the truth'. "To those who are in earnest, I strongly recommend the disciplined thinking of science and the vigorous application of its principles. I challenge each of you to seek, to acquire, and to apply that knowledge which will enable youth people and these lovely islands to develop their full potential, and to grow in prosperity and peace."

2月13日と14日、琉球と米国人の高校生300人が、地元の優れた産業、工学、科学活動を見学する青少年科学の日プログラムを楽しんだ。このプログラムは琉球電力公社の主催で、琉球政府、琉球工業連合会、米軍技術者協会、在沖米軍の協力を得て行われた。第9回目のプログラムのハイライトは北谷発電所、石川浄水場、空軍通信グループ、陸軍の瑞慶覧ダイヤルセンター事務所、共栄製鋼 、那覇下水処理場、沖縄放送、琉球政府コンピューターセンターの見学と講義である。青少年科学の日は偉大なアメリカの発明家トーマス・アルバ・エジソンの誕生日を記念し、エジソン財団の後援で青少年に科学と工学への関心を促すことを目的として、毎年世界各地で行われる国際教育プログラム。2月14日に那覇市の国場ビルで行われた昼食会では、ジェームズ・B・ランパート高等弁務官に代わり米国琉球民政局公共事業部長のハリー・W・ロンバード大佐が学生たちに「現代の若者たちの世界中で共通の叫びは、真実を求めるというものだ。真剣に取り組む意思を持つ皆さんには、科学の規律ある思考とその原理の精力的な活用を強く勧める。私は青少年とこの美しい島々がその潜在能力を最大限に発揮し、繁栄と平和の中で成長できるよう知識を求め、身につけ応用するよう一人ひとり努めてほしい」と述べた。
