U.S. PUTS FIRST MAN ON MOON -- The first attempt to put a man on the moon succeeded July 21, Okinawa time, when the U. S. put not one, but two, men on the moon. The Lunar Module (LM) of the Apollo 11 mission landed on the moon at 5:18 a.m. Astronaut Neil Armstrong stepped on the moon's surface at 11:56 a.m., followed by Astronaut Edwin Aldrin, Jr., at 12:16 p.m. An estimated 500 million persons throughout the world viewed the landing, and nowhere were they more thrilled than on Okinawa where tens of thousands viewed the dramatic, historic event on their television sets, breaking into cheers as Armstrong made his way down the LM's ladder and made the first imprint by man on the moon's surface. The High Commissioner, LTG James B. Lampert, stated: "I know I voice the awe and admiration, the respect and pride of all Americans -- sentiments, I am sure, shared by our Ryukyuan friends -- at the incredible scientific feat of the crew of the Apollo 11 -- and the people on the ground who made their fantastic achievement possible. The courage, the skill and the valor displayed by the Apollo 11 crew, Neil Armstrong, Edwin Aldrin, and Michael Collins, are almost beyond human comprehension." Chief Executive Chobyo Yara of the Government of the Ryukyu Islands hailed the successful moon landing and expressed the hope that the space development program will bring forth bright hope, confidence and mutual trust to mankind. The late U. S. President John F. Kennedy, in addressing the United Nations General Assembly on September 20, 1963, visualized 'the sending some day of this decade to the moon, not the representatives of a single nation, but the representatives of all humanity'.
