Returning to the United States recently, after spending 15 months near the South Pole, was a 38-yesr-old seismologist named Fen-King Change. Change holds the distinction of being the only Republic of China national to ever participate in Antarctic exploration. He is the first and only Asian to serve with American expeditions, thus far, in that continent. He tells how this came about, and comments on his experiences, in an article written exclusively for the U.S. Information Agency. Despite its being a land of ice and snow, the Antarctic Continent is the home of a large, active volcano, 13,000 feet high. It is called Mount Prebus [Erebus?] and is located in the McMurdo Sound area. Antarctica has an average altitude of 6,000 feet above sea level. The average ice thickness in western Antarctica was found to be about 6,000 feet. However, there are areas which run to more than 14,000 feet thick.
