A section on contemporary crafts at the exhibition of Ryukyuan cultural materials on view at the Honolulu Academy of Arts. In the foreground are ceramics, lacquerware and textiles. On the wall at right are photographs of contemporary craftsmen at work in the Ryukyus. ≪ホノルル美術アカデミーで開催された琉球文化展、現代工芸部門の一部。下に見えるのが、陶器、漆器及び織物。右側の壁に展示してあるのは、仕事中の現代琉球の職工の写真。≫
One of the historic sections in the exhibition of Ryukyuan cultural materials at the Honolulu Academy of Arts in Hawaii. The photographs, starting from upper left, show a map and photographs of 15th century castles and ruins at various places in the Ryukyu Islands. The two photographs in lower right are from the report of Commodore M. C. Perry who is said to have made the first "Cultural Survey" in 1853-54 in Okinawa. The U.S. Naval officer's report is said to be the first careful archeological reporting on the Ryukyus to have appeared in a western language. The jars (foreground) are probably from the 16th century. ≪ハワイのホノルル美術アカデミーで催された琉球文化財展示会に於ける歴史的展示品の一こま、写真は上部の左から琉球のいたるところにある15世紀の城と旧跡、下の右側の2つの写真は1853年から54年にかけて沖縄の文化調査を始めて行ったと言われているM.C.ペルリ提督の報告書から - 同提督の報告書は琉球に関する考古学のリポートでは西洋の言葉に訳された最初のものと言われている。前の方の壺は恐らく16世紀頃のものと言へよう。≫
