HALF-MILLION DOLLAR GRI MUSEUM OPENS -- Ryukyuan students are shown studying traditional Ryukyuan cultural items at the Government of the Ryukyu Islands (GRI) Museum. The museum, built with $321,000 contributed by the United States and $254,000 from the GRI for part of the construction and the cost of the land, was opened to the public on Nov. 3. U.S. Civil Administrator Gerald Warner described the museum as a "truly remarkable achievement and one which will benefit generations to come." Mr. Warner also noted that the modern building embodies the newest concepts of contemporary museum design and construction and is a "tangible manifestation of the progress made by the Ryukyuan people in the cultural field. This advance complements that made in the political, economic and social fields."
