RYUKYUAN ART TREASURES RETURNED FROM SMITHSONIAN -- Ryukyuan cultural treasures - an eight-panel screen and a scroll - which have been admired by many thousands of Americans and visitors from overseas during their period of exhibition at the Smithsonian Institution. in Washington, D.C., are back at the Government of the Ryukyus (GRI) Museum at Shuri, Naha City. The screen and scroll arrived Feb. 23 on an aircraft bringing Under Secretary of the Army Thaddeus R. Beal who is visiting Army installations in the Far East. The cultural treasures went to the United States on loan from the Government of the Ryukyus for display at the world-famous U.S. national museum in commemoration of Commodore Matthew Calbraith Perry's good will visits to Okinawa and Japan in 1853-54. Seiko Hokama, director of the GRI Museum, admires the 19th century eight-panel screen which depicts old Naha Port and route to Shuri Castle. The scroll (above) shows the Castle. ≪沖縄の文化財、スミソニヤン博物館から帰る - 沖縄の文化財二点（屏風と掛軸）が、アメリカのスミソニヤン博物館で展示され、好評をはくし、24日無事に首里の琉球政府博物館に返された。同文化財はベルリ提督の沖縄、日本訪問（1853年～54年）を記念する特別展に出品するためスミソニヤン博物館に貸してあったものであり、極東の軍事施設を視察する途中、来島したサーデアス・R・ビール陸軍次官の特別機で23日に沖縄に輸送された。写真は首里博物館に届けられた19世紀の首里 - 那覇鳥瞰図屏風を見ている外間館長。上部に見えるのは首里城を描いた掛軸である。≫
